I have been flying hot air balloons since 1994 and am a British Balloon and Airship Club (BBAC) Instructor located in southern Germany. Why not combine a holiday with some instructor and training flights in my small private balloon.
The Allgäu, located in southern Germany, is one of the most scenic ballooning regions in Europe. There are rolling green hills, interspersed with scattered forests and small lakes. In the backdrop are the Alps and Lake Constance, Europe’s largest lake. Its the perfect area for combing a holiday with some ballooning.
The ballooning activity is centered around the village of Eglofs (Argenbühl), near Isny and not far from Wangen (near the centre of the above map). There is a very active balloon club in the village the BSC Voralpenland.
From here it is 40 minutes to Friedrichshafen (International Airport FDN), 1.5 hours to Munich (International Airport MUC) and only 30 minutes to Memmingen (International Airport MEM).

Q Can this work at short notice?
Yes, we have a good 5 to 7 day forecast. So tell me which weekend is of interest and we can check the long range forecast. If t looks good check for cheap flights to Munich, Friedrichshafen or Memmingen. Sort out accommodation and a hire car.
Q What balloon do you fly?
Instructor flights take place using my Schroeder 77 with Cameron Double Burner and Basket.
Q Accommodation Options?
The balloon is kept in the small village of Eglofs. The refueling facilities are here and most of the flying is centered around this area. Eglofs itself has a small hotel and several restaurants. Holiday flats and apartments are also available. The Eglofs tourist information office has a list of available accommodation.
Q Getting there?
The nearest international airports are listed below together with transit times in a rented car.
- Memmingen – 30 Minutes (In Ryanair speak Munich West!)
- Friedrichshafen – 45 Minutes
- Munich (Josef Strauss) – 90 Minutes
- Stuttgart – 120 Minutes
- Zurich – 180 Minutes
Q What do you charge?
All I ask for is the cost of the propane that we use on a flight. There is no charge for the instruction or the use of the balloon.
Q What about if the weather is not good?
If its not flyable then there are plenty of other things to do in the area. Please always consider that weather forecast can be inaccurate. Soem great local attractions are:
- Zeppelin Museum
- A fight in a Zeppelin
- the Dornier Museum
- Island Lindau
Q What next?
Contact Me using the on-line form. I may also be available to travel to various balloon events in Europe. Feel free to ask.
